Narrative Interview Essay

The person that I interviewed is Sarah Arsenault, she is a registered nurse that works at Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3). Among the things that caught my attention to interview her are: the preparation that involves being any type of practionner of medicine. How to be prepared to act in any different type of situations involving health matters. During the interview Sarah was very kind and gentle, we had a very nice sort of conversation instead of a strict session of questions and answers. We got along in a great way and the conversation allowed me to get to know about how nursing is in the United States. At the same time she was very open about her experiences and at some times even about her personal life. As soon as the interview started we were exchanging very funny comments, some about the questions that I asked, others about present issues and even one about â€Å"booze† or alcohol. It took me about 25 minutes to finish the process, this is probably because we had a fluent and nice conversation and not just went to straight to the matter. To start I asked about what inspired her to become a nurse, â€Å"My mom, she replied, growing up and watching her knowledge about the human body†, that resulted very exciting to Sarah and had influence in her choice of career. She explained to me the requirements to complete the nursing career; she studied at TC3 for 2 years to obtain an associate’s degree in order to become a nurse. At the moment she is studying to complete a bachelors degree. She made a joke about men being nurses; she said that still in these times is a bias for a man to be a nurse, although the number is slowly increasing in the US. Sarah loves her schedule at TC3, â€Å"great hours compared to a hospital† she said. When I asked her about how she deals with complaining patients her answer was: â€Å" With humor and telling them that they are being rude, if you want my help respect me†. After dealing with her patients Sarah feel a sense of satisfaction, joy perhaps, because being helpful makes her feel good, she  also appreciates the feedback from past patients. She expressed that she didn’t want to become a doctor because of the length of school here in the US. Among the rewarding things about her job are making relationships with people and the feedback they give her. When she feels stressed she likes to talk it out with her co-workers, a couple jokes and then all its fine. It was curious because when I asked this question her immediate answer was â€Å"Drinking† but we both knew it was a joke so we laughed for about a minute or so. This moment made her more confident and open towards me. She likes working with others over working by herself because she is a people’s person. Overall Sarah’s personality is very kind and open. I liked doing the interview because I learned a lot about nursing, their purposes, kindness and their willingness to help others. To me the interview was very clear and sincere. Sarah is a straight up person that talks in a direct form about every subject but at the same time enjoys helping others with her service and knowledge. To talk about nurses is a very important topic worldwide because they play a central role in delivering health care to the people. They promote health, educate patients about illness and injury, provide care and assist in cure. These are critical matters all around the world. Overall nurses provide many different services and this results very positive for society in general. This and many other reasons were the ones that made me one to interview a person involved in this world, in this case Sarah Arsenault. I am very glad to have performed this interview because now I see things related to this matter from a very different perspective than the one I had before.

According to latest protocols administrating the pain control medications begins with you examining patients' or the families' attitude toward pain control, and then toward a specific preferred assessment tool. You also need to perform a comprehensive pain assessment by reviewing pathophysiologic or psychological causes of pain. Don't forge t to asses the patients' response after an hour of administrating the analgesic. Also, immediately inform the doctor when the pain control regiment has reached the maximum limit, or there are sighs of adverse reactions. Roosevelt, who was 42 when he became President after the assassination of William McKinley, was the youngest man ever told to hold that office. â€Å"Teddy† or â€Å"T.R.,† as he was called, was one of the nation’s most dynamic and colorful Presidents, remembered perhaps as much for his spirited personality as for the accomplishments of his administration (Pringle, 2006). Roosevelt had tremendous energy and wide-ranging interests. He was a patrician and a reformer, a cowboy and a scholar, a big-game hunter and a conservationist, and a soldier and a Nobel Peace prize winner, As President, he promoted progressive reforms and a strongly nationalistic and expansionist foreign policy. A popular writer and forceful speaker, Roosevelt coined many phrases that are skill quoted. He denounced the â€Å"malefactors of great wealth† and sought to curb these powerful businessmen by a variety of means. Antitrust legislation was enforced (â€Å"trust busting,† as it was called); the Food and Drugs Act was passed; and conservation laws were enacted to keep the nation’s natural resources out of the hands of private exploiters (Beale, 2004). His domestic program was called the â€Å"Square Deal,† from a speech in which he said he wanted â€Å"to see to it that every man has a square deal.† â€Å"Speak softly, carry a big stick, and you will go far,† was another of Roosevelt’s sayings. He often applied it in his conduct of foreign, as well as domestic, affairs. When negotiations to acquire the Panama Canal were at a standstill, Roosevelt recognized a rebel government in Panama, made a treaty with it for a canal zone, and authorized digging the canal. When a crisis with Japan seemed close, Roosevelt spoke softly but sent the â€Å"Great White Fleet† around the world to demonstrate the new naval might of the United States. Under Roosevelt, the United States became a major military and commercial power and gained an influence in world affairs (Mowry, 2004). Roosevelt’s administration saw the beginnings of 20th-century social legislation. Since the Civil War, big business had become monopolistic, operating in total disregard of the public interest. Roosevelt wanted â€Å"square deal, no more and no less† for everyone and his administration began a campaign of â€Å"trustbusting,† aimed at curbing the abuses perpetrated by big business. In 1902, Northern Securities Company, a railroad trust, was sued by the government under the Sherman Antitrust Act. Eventually, the U.S. Supreme Court held the trust to be illegal and ordered it dissolved. The Elkins Act, passed in 1903, banned secret rebates to favored shippers, a monopolistic practice that had been much criticized. In 1902, when owners of anthracite coal mines refused to accept arbitration to settle a long strike, Roosevelt threatened to use the army to operate the mines. The owners back down (Harbaugh, 2005). In 1903, the president pushed through Congress a bill to create a new executive department—the Department of Commerce and Labor—whose purpose was to promote industrial growth and improved working conditions. In addition, encouraged by endorsement at the polls, Roosevelt became more clearly a champion of progressivism. His progressivism, however, was aimed more at the correction of immediate abuses that at any radical change in American ways of life. He urged enactment of workers’ compensation laws, a graduated federated income tax, and federal taxation of inheritances to curb what he viewed as the menace of â€Å"swollen fortunes† (Blum, 2006). He, as mediator, succeeded in bringing to an end the Russo-Japanese War with the Treaty of Portsmouth in 1905. For this accomplishment he was awarded the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize. He also helped to arrange the Algeciras Conference, called to settle differences between Germany and France over Morocco. Roosevelt urged use of the Hague Peace Conference failed to deal with limitations on armaments, he sought Congressional approval for a naval building program he felt necessary for the security of the country (Pringle, 2006). To demonstrate the nation’s preparedness, Roosevelt sent the entire America battle fleet, called the â€Å"Great White Fleet,† on an around-the-world cruise. Furthermore, in 1913, Roosevelt visited South America and explored Brazil’s jungles in search of a tributary of the Amazon called the River of Doubt, which he found and explored for 900 miles of its course. During the trip, he contracted a tropical fever and begged his party, including Kermit, to leave him, as starvation threatened them. When they refused, he insisted on pushing on. The exertion probably undermined his health. When World War I started in Europe, Roosevelt urged military preparedness and an international tribunal backed by force to execute its decrees. When the Lusitania was sunk, he urged a trade embargo against Germany, assailing Wilson for â€Å"weakness.† In 1916, the Progressive party again nominated Roosevelt for President, but he withdrew when the Republicans nominated Charles Evans Hughes (Blum, 2006). Throughout the whole story Huck faces different inner arguments over how things should be done to overcome a problem. Huck finds a boy around the area and the boy explains that some guy named Phelps has found a run away nigger (which is Jim) and plans on returning it for the cash reward. Later Huck gets into a big fuss about if it’s best for him to tell Miss Watson about where Jim is located. Huck evaluates the situation and determines that if he does write to Miss Watson, Jim would benefit in the way that he would rather be a slave at home close to his family than become a slave at Pikesville; but Huck would also be relieved of his sin of doing something wicked from the beginning and not ending up in the everlasting fire but clearing his conscious to the point were God will forgive him. Huck is appealing to pathos by expressing his thoughts when he says, â€Å" I was letting on to give up sin, but away inside of me I was holding on to the biggest one of all. † (Pg.190) In this phrase Huck reveals that he knows that he was doing wrong all along and was willing to give it up but his sin was more within him. His conscious was telling him he must do the right thing aside from what he thought was fair. Though if he does tell Miss Watson where Jim there may be some consequences. First of all, Miss Watson may be mad at Jim for running away and end up selling him or she might keep him but everyone would despite him for what he did. Secondly, Jim described Huck as his only friend who had saved him from some white men by telling them about smallpox. This may cause the friendship to brake and hatred to arise between them. Lastly, Huck would be looked upon disgrace for helping a nigger run away from his owner. This side of Huck is appealing to ethos by expressing, â€Å"That’s just the way: a person does a low-down thing, and then he don’t want to take no consequences of it. Thinks as long as he can hide, it ain’t no disgrace. †(Pg. 189) This shows how Huck is credible by explaining that doing something wrong is nothing to be proud of and hiding it isn’t going to take the wrongness from it. The argument is effective because it is a very important situation in the novel. It’s a turning point on how the story takes Huck on â€Å"stealing† the nigger again. Huck then decides it is best to not tell Miss Watson but for him to take his own action on setting him free again. Even though Huck understands the other point of view he sees, he determines that it is much better to lay low and not tell anyone. The side of Huck that says he shouldn’t announce where Jim is been kept is been more rational because he explains how Jim and him wouldn’t benefit in the long run and just defame themselves. The effect over the argument is that Huck decides to find a plan to set free Jim for them to run away together once again. Another inner self argument is brought upon when the king and the duke put on a â€Å"show† to the little town in Arkansaw and get $465. This causes the uneasiness of Jim and Huck. Huck then tries to find a way to get rid of the duke and king and confess to the town’s people that they are frauds. Once again, Huck gets stuck on what would be the right way to tell on these guys. If Huck decides to tell on the duke/king he will leave happiness to the town’s people by not letting them be fooled any longer and getting them arrested for Huck and Jim to leave in peace. Huck could also steal the money from them and give it back to Mary Jane and leading them on to stay and try to get the remaining money for them not to leave empty handed as said in page 158, â€Å"They’ve got a good thing here, and they ain’t a-going to leave till they’ve played this family and this town for all they’re worth. † From this phrase we can see Huck appealing to logos because he is been critical to how the men are going to react if he would steal the money from them. In the controversy, if Huck decides to tell the doctor or Mary Jane about the situation the outcome may not be the best. If Huck tells the doctor the king or the duke could ask who told him and the doctor would blame Huck and the frauds would hate him for it and cause even more problems. Now if he were to tell Mary Jane the frauds would suspect something and leave with the money and even if Mary Jane asked for help Huck would be involved in this mess. Huck is in this hand, appealing to ethos when he says, â€Å"Her face would give them a hint, sure; they’ve got the money, and they’d slide right out and get away with it,† showing how it’s reasonable that when your about to get caught with something people tempt to run away to get away with things because they know it’s not right. The argument is effective because Huck is been reasonable by knowing that the best thing to do is to bust these thief’s and not cause more pain to the family of Mary Jane. Huck see’s both points of views in order to work things right; enough to get the frauds arrested and not causing himself any trouble. The effect of the argument is that he tells Mary Jane the truth and plans out a way for the duke/king to get caught and Jim and him to leave without no fault. Mark Twains overall argument is that society has based things from right and wrong, but sometimes what’s right may not always be right but wrong. It’s this Right vs. Wrong kind of theme, were right is wrong and wrong is right in some cases. For example, it is bad in Huck’s society to be friends with a Negro but it is right to be friends with Jim because race shouldn’t matter since we are all equal. Another example provided in the novel was when it was said to be right to turn in Jim to her owner, Miss Watson, but it is bad to do so because every man deserves to be free. In this novel Huck is been attacked with many issues such as racism, friendship, war, religion, equality, freedom, and determination. Every decision made was a struggle between Hucks mind on what was best to be done over a conflict.

Books vs Films: Comparison Nowadays, most of people in the United State of America either read a book or watch a movie at their free time, for entertainment purposes. Printed books and movies have some similarities and differences. Some people argue that books are better than movies and visa versa. However, this is a controversial issue that has been discussed a lot recently. In this article, I will compare and contrast movies and printed books. I will be discussing five main points: imagination, time consumption, entertainment value, ideas and media. I chose this topic because there has been a lot of controversy regarding movies and books. Imagination plays a very important role when we speak of books and movies. Reading allows us to imagine the situation, environment, characters and their personality. Basically, movies are made from our imagination. Studies show that reading does improve a persons creativity due to imagination: because you are using your brain while reading, your concentration and focus levels improve. On the other hand, movies leave viewers with little imagination, but they focus on visual effects. Researchers from Lancaster University propose that watching fantasy movies may help enrich the creativity in children. A point that is worth noting is time consumption. A lot of people argue about this topic. Reading a book from cover to cover takes a lot of time; of course it depends on the book, the writing style and the wording. Many people enjoy reading books for leisure purposes. Veronis Suhler Stevenson (VSS), an American research company, made a survey, where it showed the estimated time spent on reading books (in a year) in the United States of America from 2002 to 2012 for those who are 18 years old and older. As you can see in the graph below, the average time spent is around 110 hours a year.    However, movies takes at most 4 hours of your time, such as the movie Lord of the Rings 3, but the average length of a movie is between 1.5 to 2 hours. A lot of people would rather watch a movie than read a book, claiming that it is not worth spending effort and time as you can watch the movie without requiring much effort from your side. Furthermore, Entertainment Value is a part of a programme whose goal is to entertain or attract the audiences attention. Books do that by enticing the reader by specific details that engage you. Some people find books more entertaining due to this reason.   Several people who both read books and watch movies claim that they were disappointed after seeing the movie as they had a higher expectations set up when they previously read the book . On the contrary, the movie experience is better shared with friends because movies are less imaginative, so it is easier to discuss the topic with your friends. A final point to share is that even though books and movies are different entities, they have some similarities. For instance: the ideas of both topics share the same main idea. Also, both books and movies are considered as sources of media, as they are both sources of knowledge and are used for entertainment purposes. However, they differ in some points. For example: Books, as we all know, tend toward focusing on details while movies cut out the over detailed parts so that the viewer doesnt feel bored while watching the movie. In addition, movies are considered as visual media while books is a typographic media. In conclusion, we cant conclude which media is better because this all depends on the individuals choice, personality and even age. To be economically viable SEZs should be approved over a particular land area (greater than 1000 acres) for rapid economic growth in the area and for it to be profitable and self sustainable. Relaxed Tax norms, Labor laws and DTA regulations will surely attract foreign investment and major ind ustries to setup industries in the SEZs making it profitable and meeting its desired results!

As you approach it more and more details can be seen. Minute intricacies such as stone quality, texture, and perhaps some ornate detailing become apparent. Even standing at a doorway can provide some involved feelings. Does the building seem to invite the viewer inside with elaborate carvings and an open view to the interior? Or does it intimidate the viewer with its massive proportions making them feel insignificant and trivial? When inside the architecture as a medium the viewer is surrounded by and grasped within its walls and ceiling. This quality is one unique to architecture because it is the only form of art to totally surround its viewer with such magnitude. Whether one turns to the left or right, looks up or down, ceilings or walls are constantly presented to the viewer who stands amidst the intended space and substance. A line is drawn between buildings erected to serve a mere function and those which are made to integrate an influential quality into all who happen to see them often through use of extravagance. The latter can be propelled into greatness based on whether or not they are successful in carrying out with this vision set forth by their creators. This is what sets apart an ordinary building from an impressive and monumental wonder. It is interesting to note how a building is set apart from others of its time when this building is made to represent the people as a whole. Of course this building will surpass the more ordinary ones juxtaposed within the city. Of course the society or ruler would like to put their â€Å"best ... ...d and venerated being. The story begins with the death of Grady's grandfather. The grandfather's death leads Grady to begin searching for a life that he is losing. Moreover, the death of Abuela at the end of the novel finds Grady as a man saying goodbye to the last person from his childhood who loved him as a child, in essence, saying goodbye to his childhood. The journey between childhood and manhood is filled with experiences that develop the person that John Grady becomes. Some of these experiences are shared with his childhood friend, Lacy Rawlins. Each character's reactions to the experiences they share determine who they become. John Grady is a cowboy which he get that from his grandfather. (6).There is cowboy codes in the Cole's family which are independent, royal, respect, brave and courageous was passed in every generation. This action of accepting responsibility of another person results in hardships and even violence as the story progresses. Blevins? childish behaviors such as allowing his temper and pride to control his actions result in death for him, and major violence and hardship for Grady and Rawlins. This romantic view of ?right versus wrong? is also seen by the reader in Grady?s love for Alejandra. Grady believes that love will overcome all obstacles. Unfortunately, the action of love results in violence, hate, anxiety and sadness. Don Hector allows officials to arrest Grady and Rawlins as he is angry with Grady because of his affair with Alejandra. Again, the reader sees the exist entialism belief that a person is responsible for his actions and must accept the responsibility of those behaviors. Near the end of the novel, Grady expresses the guilt he feels for actions that resulted from his choices when he is talking with the judge.

Although, he enjoyed working in the firm and was good at what he did, he understood that he is destroying people’s lives and their trust. One positive think came out from this scam that was then he decided to return money to his costumer, although, it was illegal it was ethical. Different people have different views of what’s ethical, and what’s not in business world. Lack of rules and pure enforcement of rules that exist create opportunities for unethical behavior. I think, one has to decide for themselves what is ethical and what is not. An activity approved of by most members of an organization and customary in the industry is probably ethical, but it could be unethical to one or few individuals, because everybody has their own ideas and beliefs about what’s ethical and what’s not.

Frederick Douglass was born as Frederick Augustus Bailey, a slave in Tuckahoe, near Hillsborough, Maryland. His mother Harriet Bailey was a slave and Frederick also became a slave since law required children to follow status of their mothers. He was separated from his mother at an early age and was raised with a group of slave children. Driven by thirst for knowledge and learning, he bought his first book, â€Å"The Columbian Orator† at the age of thirteen. The book made him understand the miseries of enslaved people and to realize the necessity of universal freedom. This knowledge sowed a seed of revolt in Douglass that ultimately made him escape the slave camp in 1938. After his arrival in New York he changed his name to Frederick Douglass and started working for abolitionist movement. After joining American Anti-Slavery Society, he came to be known as a famous orator, journalist, and slave leader of the 19th century. His autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass was published in 1845, followed by My Bondage and My Freedom in 1855 and Life and Times of Frederick Douglass in 1881 respectively. In Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, he has provided a deep insight into a slave’s life working on the Southern plantations. At the age of eight, he was sent to the custody of Hugh and Sophia Auld at their farm house. The slaves were by law prohibited to get education and knowledge and those guilty of violation were subject to heavy fines, whipping or imprisonment. Blacks and slave did not have access to purchase books or even Bible. The plantation owners considered educated slaves as a threat to their authority and thus barred them of the privilege. Douglass faced same resistance from his master at his early age when his master’s wife tried to teach him Bible and was stopped by her husband.
